RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams hosted the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on a picture perfect day at Van Cortlandt Park on Friday afternoon. Competing against more than 200 runners from nearly 40 schools across the region, the Jaspers put forth a strong effort. The men's team finished 30th overall, while the Manhattan women captured 33rd place.
The day began with the men's race, which was contested over 10 kilometers. Mikael Rojeras (Sala, Sweden), who has paced the Jaspers all season, was once again Manhattan's top finisher. He placed 150th in a time of 33:04. Lucas Bittigkoffer (Neulingen, Germany) was the next Jasper across the line. He took 162nd in 33:15.5. Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) finished 184th in 33:34.7, while Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) was 226th in 34:57.8. Rounding out Manhattan's finishers were Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) in 236th (35:16.8) and Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.) in 241st (35:28.3).
Manhattan finished with a team score of 943 points. Syracuse claimed the regional title with 57 points and will be joined at the NCAA Championships by Columbia, which edged Iona 78-81 for the second automatic qualifying spot. The individual champion was Harvard's Maksim Korolev, who posted a time of 30:11.6.
In the 6000-meter women's race, Milena Stoicev (Nis, Serbia) led the way for the Jaspers. She finished 177th in 23:24.7 and was followed closely by Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who took 180th in 23:26.7. Alyssa Windle (Redlands, Calif.) secured 207th place with a time of 24:11.3, while Katie Saroka (Blue Point, N.Y.) grabbed 211th in 24:15.8. Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed 230th in a time of 24:48.7. Christina Sakowski (Cicero, N.Y.) and Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.), meanwhile, crossed the line consecutively. Sakowski was 242nd in 25:49.5, and Rosenberger finished 243rd in 25:55.7.
Second-ranked Providence placed three runners in the top seven to capture the team title with 44 points. Led by individual winner Abbey D'Agostino (19:48.3), Dartmouth earned a berth at Nationals with 84 team points. Manhattan's team score was 990.
The Jaspers return to Van Cortlandt Park for the season finale next weekend. Manhattan will participate in the annual ECAC/IC4A Championships, which get underway at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
