ABOUT THE GAME
The Jaspers (3-8, 0-0 MAAC) open their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule tonight with a matchup against Saint Peter's (0-11, 0-0 MAAC) at the Yanitelli Center. Manhattan is coming off a 58-43 loss at future MAAC member Monmouth on Friday, while the Peacocks dropped a 72-55 decision to La Salle on Saturday. Up next, the Jaspers return home for the only time in a five-game stretch on Sunday afternoon, when they welcome Rider to Draddy Gymnasium.
ABOUT THE JASPERS
Manhattan (3-8, 0-0 MAAC) has alternated wins and losses over the past four games, dropping the last, 58-43 at Monmouth on Friday. Junior guard Monica Roeder is Manhattan's leading scorer. She averages 11.1 points per game. In addition, Roeder ranks third in the MAAC with 2.0 three-pointers per outing. Freshman forward Shayna Ericksen is second on the team in scoring (9.3 ppg), while also pacing the squad in rebounding (7.1 rpg), steals (1.9 spg) and blocks (1.0 bpg). Senior forward Toni-Ann Lawrence contributes 8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest. Junior guard Allison Skrec hands out 3.3 assists per outing to lead the Jaspers, and senior guard Ondya Morgan distributes 2.3 assists a night to go along with her 1.9 steals per game. The Jaspers, who are in the midst of a span where they play six out of nine away from home, host Rider on Sunday afternoon before heading back on the road for three of their next four.
ABOUT THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's (0-11, 0-0 MAAC) is still looking for its first win of the 2012-13 season. The Peacocks concluded their non-conference schedule with a 72-55 loss at La Salle on Saturday. Senior forward Kristal Edwards, the only Peacock to start every game so far this season, leads Saint Peter's and ranks seventh in the MAAC in scoring with an average of 12.1 points per contest. She also ranks second on the squad with 1.8 assists per outing. Senior forward Kaydine Bent averages 7.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game, while senior forward Jesika Holmes pulls down a team-best 6.8 boards a night. Holmes also tallies 3.4 steals per contest. Junior guard Aziza May hands out a team-high 2.3 assists per outing to go along with 7.1 points per game, and sophomore guard Antonia Smith contributes 6.8 points a night. After visiting Loyola on Sunday, the Peacocks begin a three-game homestand next Thursday against Niagara.
SERIES HISTORY
Manhattan has faced Saint Peter's at least once every season since women's basketball was elevated to varsity status in 1978-79. This is the 73rd all-time meeting between the Jaspers and Peacocks, with Saint Peter's holding a 50-22 edge in the series. However, Manhattan has won the last six matchups, its longest winning streak against the Peacocks in program history. In last season's meetings, the Jaspers posted a 62-36 trumph at the Yanitelli Center and a 72-59 win in Riverdale.
LAST GAME--Monmouth 58, Manhattan 43
In its final non-conference game of the season, Manhattan dropped a 58-43 decision to Monmouth at the Multipurpose Activity Center on Dec. 28. The Hawks jumped out to a 16-7 lead before Manhattan got consecutive three-pointers from Monica Roeder and Ashley Stec to pull within three, 16-13, with 6:26 left in the first half. Monmouth led 24-18 at halftime, then extended the margin to 10 points early in the second half. After the Jaspers got back within six, Monmouth went on an 11-2 run to open up a 41-26 cushion. The margin reached a game-high 18 points, 47-29, at the 7:12 mark. Manhattan trimmed its deficit to 12 at 47-35 with 5:51 remaining, but would pull no closer, as Monmouth pulled away for a 58-43 victory. Roeder paced the Jaspers with a game-high 18 points, while Stec finished with 10 points and Nicole Isaacs added nine points.
