RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team suffered its first home setback of the season Saturday falling 1-0 to Holy Cross (4-5-1). Entering the game with consecutive one goal victories at Gaelic Park, the Jaspers battled through 72 minutes of scoreless action before Crusaders' senior Hannah Earner notched the decisive goal.
Earner broke through a solid goalkeeping efforts from Kara Davis and Kristen Skonieczny who combined for eight saves for Manhattan (3-5). In an unsettled situation in front of the net, Earner took a feed from freshman midfielder Megan Greineder and finished it with a header. It was her second game winner of the year and Greineder's third assist this season.
Davis recorded her fifth straight scoreless half in goal, making two saves along the way. She lowered her nationally ranked goals against average to 0.55 and has not allowed a goal since Sept. 2. In her fifth straight match playing the second half for the Jaspers, Skonieczny made a game-high six saves.
Manhattan forwards Martine Diamond and Emily Ude combined for four shots on goal, but could not sneak one past Crusaders' goalkeeper Carly McCabe. McCabe was forced to make four of her five saves in the second half to lock up the shutout.
The Jaspers have a week to rest up before opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at home on Saturday against Saint Peter's. Manhattan hosts the Peacocks at 7 p.m.
