WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Manhattan College volleyball team concluded its stay at the Tribe Invitational with a pair of matches on Saturday. After dropping a 25-18, 25-22, 25-23 decision against Georgetown (4-0), the Jaspers (1-5) suffered a 15-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-20 loss to Campbell (3-4) at William & Mary's Kaplan Arena.
In Manhattan's first match of the day, Georgetown quickly opened up an 11-1 lead. The Jaspers pulled within six at 15-9 before a 5-1 Georgetown rally brought the margin back to 10 points, 20-10. The Hoyas took the first set by a 28-15 count.
Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.) slammed a pair of early kills to give the Jaspers an early lead in the second set before Georgetown used a 6-0 run to take a 7-2 advantage. After the Hoyas increased their cushion to 20-9, Manhattan rallied for nine of the next 10 points to get back within three, 21-18. However, Georgetown won three of the next four points to reach set point. Manhattan fought off three set point opportunities before the Hoyas closed out a 25-22 set win.
After Georgetown won the first three points of the third set, the Jaspers took a 5-4 lead on a kill by Lampasona. The Hoyas tied it at 5-5, and it would be tied again at 6-6 before a 14-8 Manhattan rally gave the Jaspers a 20-14 advantage. However, Georgetown responded by claiming 11 of the final 14 points, winning the set 25-23, and the match 3-0.
Lampasona led the Jaspers with nine kills. She added three blocks. Mariana Furquim (Curibita, Brazil) finished with seven kills and 16 digs, while Deandra Anderson (Durham, N.C.) registered six blocks. Hollegn Henderson (Long Beach, Calif.) handed out 30 assists to go along with eight digs, and Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) recorded a match-high 17 digs. As a team, the Jaspers hit .157 (34 kills, 16 errors, 115 attempts) in the match.
Dani White had 17 kills on .536 hitting for Georgetown. She also registered six blocks. Lindsay Wise added 10 kills and hit .500, while Alex Johnson tallied eight kills and 16 digs. Haley Lowrance distributed 38 assists to go along with five digs and three blocks. Lauren Saar and Whitney Jencks each contributed 10 digs, as the Hoyas outdug the Jaspers 58-56. Georgetown hit .230 (45-16-126) as a team.
The first set against Campbell started out tight, as there were nine ties and three lead changes early on. With the score knotted at 14-14, Karlee Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.) slammed a kill that gave Manhattan the lead for good. Furquim followed with a pair of kills before the Camels got a kill from Lindsey Coats to pull back within two, 17-15. However, Manhattan scored the final eight points of the frame, and a kill by Furquim finished off the Jaspers' 25-15 set win. Manhattan was on fire in the first set, scoring 22 of its 25 points on kills and hitting .413 as a team (three errors, 46 attacks).
The second set also began in a back-and-forth fashion, as there were five ties and three lead changes in the first 10 points. Manhattan led 5-4 before Campbell went on a 6-1 rally to open up a 10-6 advantage. The Jaspers scored the next two points to make it 10-8, but the Camels took nine of the next 10 to push their advantage to 10 points, 19-9. After back-to-back kills by Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) brought Manhattan back within six, 20-14, Campbell ended the frame on a 5-1 spurt and evened the match with a 25-15 set win. In the second set, the Camels hit .483 (16-2-29) as a team.
Manhattan jumped out to an early 4-1 advantage in set three. Campbell rallied to tie the score at 7-7 before the Jaspers won three straight points to go up 10-7. Manhattan still led by three at 14-11 when Campbell went on a 6-1 run to take the lead, 17-15. After a Volovski kill brought the Jaspers back within one, the Camels went on a 6-2 rally to extend their advantage to 23-18. With a 25-20 set win, Campbell gained a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Camels carried that momentum into the fourth set, building a 5-2 cushion. Manhattan got within one at 6-5 before Campbell went on an 8-4 spurt to increase its lead to six points, 14-8. The Jaspers again rallied, and trimmed their deficit to two when a Deandra Anderson kill made it 18-16. However, that's as close as Manhattan would get, as Campbell scored five of the next six points to extend the margin to 23-17. Campbell took the fourth set by a score of 25-20 to finish off a 3-1 victory.
Furquim and Volovski each had a double-double against Campbell. Furquim tallied 14 kills and 18 digs, while Volovski notched 14 kills and 12 digs. Lampasona also pounded 14 kills in the match, and Deandra Anderson added 11 kills on .556 hitting. Henderson distributed 43 assists. Huntoon returned 16 digs and earned all-tournament honors. Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) added 10 digs, as Manhattan outdug Campbell 78-66. The Jaspers hit .276 (62-19-156) as a unit against Campbell.
Coats hit .448 in the match and led Campbell with 14 kills. Sam Zuber contributed 11 kills on .429 hitting while also posting five service aces and five blocks. Katelyn Layden and Heather Wilson both posted double-doubles for the Camels. Layden finished with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Wilson tallied 41 assists and 13 digs. She also recorded three blocks and seven kills (on .400 hitting). Campbell hit .275 (54-12-153) as a team.
The Jaspers conclude their preseason tournament schedule at the Harvard Invitational next weekend. Manhattan takes on the host Crimson (0-3) at 7 p.m. on Friday, then faces Northern Kentucky (7-0) and Providence (1-7) on Saturday.
