Manhattan-Nebraska-Omaha Box Score
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - During its week in Florida, the Manhattan College softball team has faced one quality pitcher after another. That trend continued on Tuesday, as the Jaspers (1-7) were shut out twice at the Rebel Spring Games. After falling to Green Bay (3-8) by a 9-0 margin, Manhattan dropped a 5-0 decision to Nebraska-Omaha (6-8) at Oren Brown Park.
In their first game of the day, the Jaspers fell behind early on Alli Rivera's two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Manhattan's defense then fell apart in the second. The Jaspers committed four errors in the inning, allowing seven Phoenix base runners to cross the plate (only two of the runs were earned). The big blow in the inning was a three-run double by Stacey Butts that made the score 8-0. She later scored to give Green Bay a 9-0 advantage.
That was more than enough offense for Green Bay pitcher Allison Goecks, who allowed just three base runners in the game, all on walks. Goecks (1-4) struck out three Jaspers in the five-inning no-hitter.
Kelsi Redding (Tucson, Ariz.) (0-3) made the start in the circle for Manhattan and took the loss. She surrendered nine runs, only four of which were earned, and six hits, struck out three and walked one. Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.) had a strikeout in a 1-2-3 fourth.
In the game against Nebraska-Omaha, the Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Nebraska-Omaha extended that advantage to 3-0 on a two-run homer by Katelyn Hinton in the fourth, then Amber Lutmer belted a two-run homer of her own in the sixth to make it 5-0.
The Manhattan offense continued to struggle against the Mavericks. Meghan McDevitt (Nutley, N.J.) had a leadoff single in the bottom of the second, but that was the Jaspers' only hit until Bowen's leadoff single in the sixth. Manhattan was unable to convert either hit into a rally and fell by a 5-0 score.
Amy Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) went the first six innings in the circle, giving up five runs on eight hits. Bright (0-4) recorded six strikeouts without surrendering a walk. Redding retired the Mavericks in order in the sixth, picking up a strikeout.
Dana Elsasser (3-4) was impressive in the circle for Nebraska-Omaha. She tossed a two-hit shutout, striking out five and walking two in the contest. Offensively, Hinton and Lutmer combined to go 5-for-6 with two home runs, four runs scored and five RBIs.
The Jaspers have one more day of action at the Rebel Spring Games before returning north. Manhattan faces Cleveland State (4-16) at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, then concludes the trip with a 1 p.m. matchup against Howard (1-16).
