Friday Recap
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Tom Bechert (Munich, Germany) shattered Rajne Svenssohn's school record and established the best heptathlon mark in the NCAA this indoor season on day two of the Brother Jasper Invitational at Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday. Bechert's total of 5819 points bettered Svenssohn's old mark of 5503, set in 2004.
With first place and an IC4A-qualifying score already secured, Bechert needed to run the final event, the 1000 meters, in just 3:15 to break the record. He ended up running a personal-best time of 2:43, earning 840 points in the event, to shatter the mark by more than 300 points. His score was also nearly 600 points better than this season's previous NCAA-best, a 5263 by Kent State's Dexter Shreve on Dec. 7. The top 16 heptathletes in the nation will qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 8-9, and Bechert is a virtual lock to claim one of those 16 places.
In addition, Felix Siljeback-Larsen (Vasteras, Sweden) qualified for the IC4A Championships in the heptathlon. His score of 5111 points is currently the fourth-best total in the NCAA this season.
Also on Saturday, Alina Koenigs (Moenchengladbach, Germany), who won three different events on Friday, finished first in the women's triple jump with a leap of 10.22 meters (33 feet, 6½ inches). Mike Carroll (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Matt Perrelli (Smithtown, N.Y.) went 1-3 in the men's high jump. Carroll cleared 1.94 m (6'4¼), while Perrelli jumped 1.89 m (6'2¼).
The Brother Jasper Invitational was Manhattan's final competition of the calendar year. The Jaspers return to action at the NYC Gotham Cup from the New Balance Armory Track & Field Center on Jan. 11.
