Jaspers Open MAAC Play With Win at Marist

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The last time the Manhattan men's soccer team won their conference opener they defeated the Canisius Golden Griffins, 2-0 on Oct. 12, 2002. Almost a decade later, the Jaspers (1-7-1, 1-0 MAAC) opened up conference play with a victory as they defeated Marist 1-0 on Friday night.

In a hotly contested matchup, the Red Foxes (4-5-1, 0-1 MAAC) controlled possession and tempo for a good chunk of the first half peppering the Manhattan defense with shots and forcing goalkeeper George Ellis to make four saves in the first frame.

After a barrage of shots and deflections by the Jasper keeper, his team was able to gain control for a moment. In the 32nd minute, Eugene Heerschap sent a cross from the right corner that split two defenders. Sophomore Reese Akers would be able to settle the feed and bury a shot from eight yards out to notch his first collegiate goal and give Manhattan the 1-0 advantage.

Following halftime, the Red Foxes continued an onslaught of offense trying to find an equalizer. Marist would finish the contest with 21 shots and nine corner kicks, beating the Jaspers in both of those categories. Despite the aggressive play, the Manhattan defense was able to hold strong and pick up the win.

Tensions did flare in the second half as Akers, Ellis, and C.J. Dragovich each picked up yellow cards while Cesar Ceja received a warning for Marist.

Ellis finished the game with five saves, picking up the shutout while Anthony Sokalski made three saves for the Red Foxes. Marist was paced offensively by Stephan Brossard who had five shots, including two on goal.

Manhattan will be back in action on Sun., Oct. 7 when they visit MAAC rival Siena.
