WEST POINT, N.Y. - After two weeks of nothing but training runs, the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams finally got to face some outside competition at the season-opening Army Open on Friday.  Both freshman-laden squads performed well, with the men and women both taking second in the unofficial team scoring over the five-kilometer course at the West Point Golf Course.

On the men's side, Manhattan's top finisher was sophomore Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.), who took 11th overall in a time of 16:07.80.  He was followed by a trio of freshmen, with Greg Perrier (Dix Hills, N.Y.) finishing 15th (16:18.40), Anthony Colasurdo (Lanoka Harbor, N.J.) placing 17th (16:23.80) and Stephen Chantry (Williamsburg, Va.) crossing the line in 19th (16:27.90).  Rounding out Manhattan's top five were Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) (20th, 16:30.40), Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) (25th, 16:53.70) and Kevin O'Brien (Attleboro, Mass.) (26th, 16:54.30).

The Manhattan women were led by Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden), who finished ninth in a time of 19:31.40.  Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Alexandra Cappello (Scarsdale, N.Y.) placed 12th and 13th, respectively.  Hayes completed the course in a time of 19:37.30, while Cappello posted a time of 19:40.90.  Meghan Marro (Cherry Hill, N.J.) was the next Jasper to cross the line.  She took 16th in 20:34.60.  Freshman Janie Turek (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) completed Manhattan's top five in 19th place (20:47.00).  She was followed closely by Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) (20th, 20:48.70), Erica Brady (Quincy, Mass.) (21st, 20:56.80), Emmy Koskinen (Sodertalje, Sweden) (22nd, 21:03.60), Johanna Petruski (Toms River, N.J.) (24th, 21:13.00) and Alyssa Windle (San Bernardino, Calif.) (26th, 21:24.40).

Manhattan returns to action at the Iona Meet of Champions, which will be held in Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday, Sept. 17.
