RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The Manhattan men's lacrosse team scored eight goals in the third quarter and held on to defeat VMI 16-10 Saturday afternoon in Lexintgton, Va.
The Jaspers (2-8, 1-0 MAAC) used a season-high 16 goals, including three each from junior midfielder Brendan Rogers and redshirt freshman Brian McGrath to record their first MAAC win of the season against the Keydets ( 2-7, 0-2 MAAC)
Trailing 6-5 at halftime, Manhattan caught fire in the final two quarters and put together an 8-3 advantage out of the break to come out victorious over VMI. The Jaspers used five consecutive goals by Rogers, McGrath and senior Brett Miranda, to build an 11-7 lead with 8:07 remaining in the third quarter and never trailed from that point on.
Overall, Manhattan led VMI with a season-high in shots (54-32), while losing the edge in ground balls (48-31) and face-offs (22-9).
In net, freshman Rich Akapnitis made nine saves in recording his second victory of the season. Keydet's keeper Kelly McMinn made 19 saves in the loss.
Manhattan looks to continue their winning ways Saturday, when they welcome Jacksonville for the first MAAC home contest of the 2011 season. Opening face-off is set for 1 p.m.
