TODAY'S GAME
The Lady Jaspers (17-6, 9-3 MAAC) continue their three-game homestand this afternoon against Saint Peter's (3-20, 3-9 MAAC) on "Pack the House Day" at Draddy Gymnasium. Manhattan has won five straight games, its longest winning streak since 2003, including a 54-42 triumph over Canisius on Sunday afternoon. The Peahens dropped a 69-60 decision against Loyola on Sunday and have lost five straight. The Lady Jaspers posted a 58-44 victory when the squads met in Jersey City on Jan. 10.
THE LADY JASPERS
The national leaders in scoring defense (49.3 ppg), Manhattan (17-6, 9-3 MAAC) enters today's game the winners of five straight and nine out of 10. The Lady Jaspers are coming off a 54-42 victory over Canisius on Sunday afternoon. Senior guard Abby Wentworth paces the MAAC in both scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg). She also ranks second in the league in steals (3.1 spg). Junior forward Lindsey Loutsenhizer ranks second on the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 8.7 points and 5.2 boards per contest, while freshman guard/forward Monica Roeder contributes 7.4 points per outing. Junior forward Nadia Peters pulls down a team-high 6.2 rebounds to go along with 6.9 points per game. She is also among the MAAC leaders in both blocks (second, 1.4 bpg) and steals (third, 2.7 spg). Today is "Pack the House Day" at Draddy Gymnasium.
THE PEAHENS
Saint Peter's (3-20, 3-9 MAAC) comes into today's contest looking to snap a five-game losing streak. The Peahens dropped a 69-60 decision against Loyola on Sunday afternoon. Junior guard Jynae Judson leads the Peahens in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.4 points and 7.6 boards per contest. She also paces the team with 1.5 steals per outing. Junior forward Lauren Morris ranks second on the squad with 8.3 points per game, while freshman guard Teresa Maningrasso contributes 7.4 points and 1.4 steals per outing. Freshman guard Khadijah Young is the Peahens' top three-point threat. She's shooting .303 from downtown and drains 1.3 treys per game. Junior forward Jessica Coles averages a team-leading 1.3 blocks per game, and freshman guard Aziza May hands out 3.2 assists per contest. Saint Peter's, which is currently tied with Canisius and Rider for seventh place in the MAAC, visits Fairfield on Monday night before opening a three-game homestand.
SERIES HISTORY
The Lady Jaspers knocked off the Peahens 58-44 in Jersey City on Jan. 10 and has won three straight against Saint Peter's. Manhattan has beaten Saint Peter's at Draddy Gymnasium in each of the last five seasons, including a 66-48 victory on Jan. 29, 2010. This is the 70th all-time meeting between the schools, and Saint Peter's holds a 50-19 edge in the series.
WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME
Manhattan jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back en route to a 54-42 victory over Canisius at Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday. The win was the Lady Jaspers' fifth straight, their longest winning streak since the 2002-03 season. Canisius didn't get on the board until the 9:53 mark of the first half, and the Lady Jaspers led 24-8 before a 10-0 run brought the Griffs within six. Manhattan held a 27-18 advantage at halftime, then opened the second half on a 10-4 spurt to bring its lead to 15 points. Canisius got within five at 40-35, but the Lady Jaspers responded with a 10-0 run to again make their lead 15 before finishing off the 54-42 triumph. Alyssa Herrington drained four three-pointers and tallied a game-high 16 points, while Lindsey Loutsenhizer just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.
PACK THE HOUSE
Today Manhattan is participating in the NCAA's fourth annual women's basketball "Pack the House" challenge. The goal of "Pack the House" is to set a program attendance record. Student government sponsored a pregame reception, and there are a number of student giveaways, including a brand-new iPod touch. The Lady Jaspers also collected canned food items to donate to the Regional Food Bank of New York. Last year, a season-high 1,428 fans came to Draddy Gymnasium for "Pack the House Night" against Saint Peter's on Jan. 29.
