Turnovers Prove Costly In 58-43 Loss at Army

Box Score

WEST POINT, N.Y. - A 27-5 Army run over the final 10 minutes of the first half proved to be the difference on Wednesday evening, as the Manhattan College women's basketball team (1-3) dropped a 58-43 decision to the Black Knights (4-1) at Christl Arena in its final game before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Manhattan got buckets from Nadia Peters (Bronx, N.Y.) and Toni-Ann Lawrence (Elmont, N.Y.) on its first two possessions of the game before Army rallied to go in front 7-4.  The Jaspers regained the lead on a pair of Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) layups, but Army again went back in front on a trey by Jen Hazlett.  However, Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.) responded with a trey, then, after a Maggie Blair (Briarcliff, N.Y.) steal, Loutsenhizer drained a three-pointer to put Manhattan up 14-10 with 10:44 remaining in the first half.

The Black Knights took control from there, though, forcing turnovers on the next five Manhattan possessions and outscoring the Jaspers 6-0 over the next two minutes.  After a jumper by Allison Skrec (Roselle, N.J.) at the 8:21 mark brought Manhattan back within four at 20-16, Army scored 17 of the next 20 points to take a 37-19 lead into the locker room.

Army's lead reached a game-high 21 points on a Molly Yardley jumper that made it 52-31 with 8:14 remaining.  Manhattan responded with a 9-3 spurt to get trim its deficit to 55-40 with 3:15 left, but would pull no closer and fell by that same 15-point margin, 58-43.

Loutsenhizer was the only Jasper in double-figures with a game-high 21 points.  She also grabbed four rebounds.  Peters tallied six points to go along with a team-best six boards, while Lawrence and Roeder chipped in five points apiece.  Manhattan shot 37.2 percent (16-of-43) from the field, but was just 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from downtown.  The Jaspers went 8-for-14 (57.1 percent) at the free throw line.  Manhattan committed a season-high 24 turnovers, which Army converted into 28 points.

For the Black Knights, Hazlett led the way with 13 points and seven rebounds.  Yardley added 10 points and seven assists, while Olivia Schretzman, Anna Simmers and Jessica Waggoner all tallied eight points.  Army shot 45.7 percent (21-of-46) from the field and outrebounded Manhattan 32-25.  The Black Knights went 3-for-5 (60 percent) from three-point land and 13-for-19 (68.4 percent) at the charity stripe.

The Jaspers conclude their season-opening five-game road trip on Sunday, when they visit NJIT (3-1) at 2 p.m.  NJIT is coming off a 65-49 victory at Delaware State on Wednesday.  The Jaspers and Highlanders met for the first time last season, with Manhattan posting a 62-48 victory at Draddy Gymnasium.
