Loyola Runs Past Jaspers 3-0

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Hector Arellano headed in a goal off a corner kick to get Loyola on the board in the first half as the Greyhounds went on to defeat Manhattan 3-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action on Friday night. The win snapped a three match losing streak for the Greyhounds who win their first conference game of the season.

The Jaspers (0-11-0) played a lineup consisting of fast, aggressive players put they were unable to muster many scoring chances. One of their better opportunities came down one in the first half when Deia Nassar flicked the ball over keeper Kyle Wittman that hit off the cross bar and landed in the arms of Wittman. Then, in the second half, Eugene Heerschapp ripped a low shot from just outside the box but Wittman was again able to make the save.

Loyola would take their one goal advantage in to the halftime break which seemed to give Manhattan fresh legs as they came out with a strong flurry in the offensive half including a couple plays in the box despite not being able to put a shot on net.

In the 70th minute, Loyola's Vegard Vinje took a long pass from Connor Thompson with his back turned to the goal, spun around defender Erik Montinard and fired a shot from about 20 yards out that ricocheted off the right post and in. The Greyhounds added to their lead eight minutes later when Thompson came in on the left side and fire a zero-angle shot from 8 yards out that slipped through the hands of Jasper keeper George Ellis.

Loyola outshot the Jaspers 15-6 overall in the contest and spent the majority of the time in the offensive third as they also took nine corner kicks. Ellis made a total of four saves, two in each half, while Wittman made one. Stephen Dooley, who got the assist on the Arellano goal, was issued a yellow card in the second half after getting in to a shoving match with Jason Iannone.

The Jaspers are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 9 when they host Rider in a MAAC contest at 10 a.m. at Gaelic Park
