Manhattan (3-16, 1-7 MAAC)
Manhattan returns to Draddy Gymnasium after picking up a 51-49 victory over Niagara in its last game in Riverdale on Monday afternoon. Sophomore guard George Beamon (14) led the Jaspers in scoring and graduate student Demetrius Jemison (10) also posted double-figures as the Jaspers defeated Niagara for the first time in their last nine meetings.
The Jaspers dropped their last contest on Thursday falling 62-50 at Saint Peter's, despite double-doubles from Beamon (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Jemison (13 points, 10 rebounds). Freshman forward Rhamel Brown chipped in 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting and eight rebounds, in limited action due to foul trouble.
Beamon has led Manhattan in scoring in four of the last five contests and he is averaging a team-high 15.2 points per game, which ranks fifth in the MAAC. Beamon has scored in double-figures 16 of 19 appearances this season and he has a team-high five double-doubles. The Roslyn, N.Y. native has emerged as one of the top rebounding guards in the conference as he is tied for sixth with a 7.2 rebounding average.
Jemison has three double-doubles in the last five contests. The 6'8", 240-pound forward from Alabama has averaged 10.5 points and 8.3 rebounds since receiving a graduate transfer waiver from the NCAA on Dec. 10. Jemison has recorded five double-digit rebounding performances in 10 appearances this season.
Brown has polished his offensive game as of late. Four of his seven double-digit scoring performances this season have come in the last six games. He is also averaging 10.3 points and 9.5 rebounds during this six game stretch. Brown leads the MAAC with 43 blocks and with a 4.5 offensive rebounding average. He is third in the league with 8.5 rebounds per game.
Manhattan ranks among the top free-throw shooting teams in the conference standing third with a 69.1% mark. Freshman point guard Michael Alvarado leads the Jaspers and is seventh in the MAAC shooting 80.5% at the charity stripe.
Saint Peter's (10-9, 5-3 MAAC)
Saint Peter's is coming off a 77-69 victory over Siena on Friday night in Jersey City. Senior forward Ryan Bacon exploded for 25 points, 15 rebounds, five blocks and four steals. The Peacocks have won two of their last three MAAC contests.
The Peacocks have gone 3-5 since enjoying a five-game winning streak in early December. Saint Peter's is led by senior guard Wesley Jenkins who is averaging 14.3 points per game. Jenkins was named MAAC and ECAC Player of the Week on Monday after scoring a career-high 31 points against Niagara. He followed up the performance with 24 points in the Peacocks contest with Loyola on Monday.
Senior point guard Nick Leon has started all 19 games for Saint Peter's. Leon has posted 10.4 points per game and he is ranked fourth in the MAAC with a 82.4% free-throw shooting percentage.
Saint Peter's is one of the top defensive teams in the conference, yielding just 60.2 points per game. The Peacocks also lead the league with a 38.2% field goal percentage defense.
