Scouting Report
Manhattan (2-14, 0-5 MAAC)
Manhattan has been on a 14-game downswing since earning season opening wins over NJIT and Penn. The Jaspers return to Draddy Gymnasium coming off a three day lay-off without a game, after playing its previous three contests over a five day span.
The Jaspers are coming off a hard-fought 57-50 setback at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday. For the second straight game graduate student Demetrius Jemison recorded a double-double. Jemison has made seven starts for the Jaspers in as many games, since receiving a graduate transfer waiver from the NCAA on Dec. 10. The 6'8" 240-pound forward from Alabama is averaging 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest. He is shooting 45.1% from the field.
Manhattan is led in scoring by sophomore guard George Beamon who had his seven game streak of posting double-figures snapped at Florida Atlantic. Beamon is averaging 14.9 points per game, he has scored double-digits 13 times and he has led the team in scoring on seven occasions. Beamon has been a major contributor on the glass as he holds a 7.0 rebounding average. He is second on the team shooting 75.3% from the free-throw line.
Jaspers' freshman forward Rhamel Brown continues to grow within the Manhattan system. Brown is coming off his third double-double of the season by grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds and scoring 10 points at Florida Atlantic. The 6'6" product of Transit Tech High School in Brooklyn is third in the MAAC with an 8.4 rebounding average and he leads the conference with 72 offensive boards. Brown has a 7.4 scoring average and he leads the Jaspers with a 49.5% field goal mark.
Manhattan is getting 9.5 points per game from junior Kidani Brutus who has transitioned to the point guard position in the absence of freshman Michael Alvarado. Alvarado has missed the last three games recovering from an injury. Brutus is the Jaspers top threat from downtown as he leads the team with 29 3-pointers. He is shooting 36.7% from long range.
Canisius (7-8, 1-4 MAAC)
The Golden Griffs have won three of their last five contests, including a split in two MAAC games last weekend. Last Friday, Canisius earned a 62-61 victory over three-time defending MAAC champion Siena in Buffalo, N.Y.
Canisius was most recently edged 77-76 on a buzzer beater by Rider on Sunday, despite a game-high 20 point effort from guard Julius Coles. Coles shot 8-for-15 from the field and he is averaging 11.1 points and 4.5 rebounds this season.
The Golden Griffs are led in scoring and rebounding by senior forward Elton Frazier. Frazier is averaging 11.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest. The 6'6" 208-pound Syracuse native is seventh in the MAAC shooting 51.1% from the field.
Sophomore guard Alshawn Hymes has been the Golden Griffs top contributor off the bench. Hymes is averaging 10.6 points appearing as a reserve in 14 of 15 games. Hymes leads the MAAC averaging 2.9 3-pointers per game and he is third in the conference shooting 43.6% beyond the arc.
