JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Abby Wentworth (Portland, Maine) and Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) combined for 40 points, as the Manhattan College women's basketball team opened its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) road schedule with a 58-44 victory over Saint Peter's (1-14, 1-3 MAAC) at the Yanitelli Center on Tuesday night. Wentworth finished with a game-high 21 points and Loutsenhizer added 19 to lead the Lady Jaspers (10-5, 2-2 MAAC) to their second consecutive MAAC win.
"This is always a tough place to play, so it was nice to come in here and get a hard-fought road victory," Head Coach John Olenowski said.
The first half featured four ties and seven lead changes, and neither side led by more than four points at any point in the period. Saint Peter's took a 10-6 advantage at the 14:43 mark before Manhattan responded with a layup from Toni-Ann Lawrence (Elmont, N.Y.), then a Wentworth trey to go in front, 11-10. The Peahens regained a 14-10 edge on a pair of layups, but the Lady Jaspers scored the next seven points to take their largest lead of the half, 18-14, with 9:02 remaining.
The see-saw pace continued, as Saint Peter's went on a 5-0 run to go back in front before the Lady Jaspers took the lead for good on a Lawrence layup. Loutsenhizer added another layup to give Manhattan a 25-22 halftime lead. Loutsenhizer had 10 first half points.
Saint Peter's trimmed its deficit to one, 27-26, early in the second half before Manhattan went on an 11-4 rally to extend its lead to eight points, 38-30, with 13:39 left. The Peahens got back within three on a pair of free throws by Jessica Coles at the 10:00 mark, but the Lady Jaspers scored the next five points to push their lead back to eight, 45-37, with 6:49 remaining.
Lauren Morris hit a three-pointer on the Peahens' next possession, but that's as close as it would get the rest of the way. The Lady Jaspers went 16-for-18 at the free throw line in the second half (Wentworth was 9-for-10 at the charity stripe in the period, including 7-for-8 over the final 4:07) to turn a tight contest into a 14-point, 58-44 victory.
Wentworth went 11-for-13 at the free throw line and had five assists and four rebounds to go along with her 21 points. Loutsenhizer went 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-4 at the line in the game. She also corralled seven rebounds. Lawrence finished with nine points and a team-high eight boards, as Manhattan outrebounded Saint Peter's 33-31. Nadia Peters (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied five points, five rebounds and four steals, and Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) posted four points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Overall, the Lady Jaspers shot 32.7 percent (17-of-52) from the field, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from downtown and 84 percent (21-of-25) at the line.
