RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference members beware, the Manhattan College golf team is no easy putt and those who overlook them could be in for a rough day. Exhibit A: Saint Peter's College, who fell to the Jaspers in Wednesday's head-to-head match at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y.
Fresh off two consecutive invitational victories at St. Joseph's College and Purchase College, Manhattan hit the links ready to go this afternoon, outshooting a talented Peacock's squad in team total, 298 to 300.
"A tremendous group effort, especially down one of our best players," coach Walter Olsewski said. "Shooting a 298 was great, I think when teams see us they are going to find out we are here to compete and put up a formidable test."
Led by senior Thomas Romano's sizzling 68 score, good for first overall on the day, Manhattan battled back from a slow start to edge out their conference foe. Also contributing to the low total, fellow classmate Matt Baney and freshman Chris Calabro each recorded a 75 through 18 holes. Newcomer Paul Toohey, who has been a major contributor in the Green and White's recent successes, shot an 80.
On the opposing side, Saint Peter's had two players post strong matching 73 totals in senior Sean Fitzpatrick and sophomore Andrew Gain.
The close finish and MAAC ties should create an interesting environment when the two squads meet again on Oct. 5th at the Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J. Tee off is set for 2:30 p.m.
