MONTREAL - In the first game of its Canadian tour, the Manhattan College women's basketball team defeated the Universite du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) 74-68 in an exhibition contest at le Centre Sportif on Monday night.
The Lady Jaspers built a 19-7 lead after one quarter, but UQAM outscored Manhattan 23-15 in the second quarter to trim its deficit to four, 34-30, at the half. Manhattan pushed its advantage back to seven points, 54-47, after three before the Citadins fought back to take a one-point lead in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Jaspers immediately countered before pulling away for the 74-68 triumph.
Playing her first game in a Manhattan uniform, freshman Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.) led all scorers with 23 points. Abby Wentworth (Portland, Maine) had a double-double with 19 points and 11 assists, while Toni-Ann Lawrence (Elmont, N.Y.) added 16 points. Manhattan had a distinct advantage on the boards, and Nadia Peters (Bronx, N.Y.) led the way with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Michelle Auger-Bellemare paced the Citadins with 20 points and Emie Simard added 14 points for UQAM. Karine Boudrais also reached double figures with 12 points.
The Lady Jaspers have an off day in Montreal on Tuesday before heading to Ottawa on Wednesday. Manhattan plays a pair of games in the Canadian capital, taking on the University of Ottawa on Thursday night and Carleton University on Friday night.
