Manhattan (2-3)
Manhattan's youth movement has been centered around freshman point guard Michael Alvarado, freshman forward Rhamel Brown and sophomore guard George Beamon. Alvarado, a local product from the Bronx, is averaging a team-high 14.2 points, going along with 4.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
Brown is coming off his second double-double in five games this season, posting a career-high 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds on Friday against Texas A&M. Brown now leads the Jaspers in rebounding with 7.8 boards per contest. He is also averaging 7.0 points and shooting 55.6% from the field.
Beamon has played a big part in the Jaspers offense with a 13.6 scoring average, while pulling down 7.6 rebounds per game. The Roslyn, N.Y. native is shooting 42.6% from the floor.
Newcomer Kidani Brutus has given the Jaspers quality minutes, starting all five games this season. The junior transfer from Carl Albert State is averaging 11.4 points and 4.2 rebounds. Brutus harbors a 40.4% shooting percentage, along with team-highs in 3-point (37.0%) and free-throw (81.8%) shooting.
Manhattan is short-handed at the Old Spice Classic, working with an injury plagued roster. The Jaspers entered the tournament averaging 71.3 points with a 44.7% team shooting percentage and 76.0% mark from the charity stripe. The Jaspers have dropped their last three contests, falling to Long Island, Wisconsin and Texas A&M.
Georgia (3-2)
Georgia has also lost its first two contests at the 2010 Old Spice Classic. The Bulldogs dropped its first game to Notre Dame (89-83) on Thanksgiving Day, and then fell 65-58 to #20 Temple on Friday.
The Bulldogs are led by junior forward Travis Leslie who is averaging a team-high 18.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. The 6'4" 205-pound product of Decatur, Ga. is coming off a 14 point, seven rebound performance against Temple.
Georgia entered the Old Spice Classic with home wins over Mississippi Valley State, Colorado, and a road victory at Saint Louis.
The Bulldogs are coached by Mark Fox who is in his second season at the helm. Georgia has four starters back from last season when the Bulldogs posted a 14-17 overall record and 5-11 mark in the SEC. Georgia was 0-11 on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites in 2009-2010.
