RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) took second overall to lead the Manhattan College men's cross country team to a 13th-place finish in the University Division at the IC4A Championships from Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday afternoon. On the women's side, Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) finished 17th, as Manhattan captured 19th place overall in the University Division of the ECAC Championships.
The nation's largest athletic conference, the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) consists of more than 300 members across Divisions I, II and III. The Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) was founded in 1876 and has been holding a men's cross country championship meet since 1908. The ECAC began holding a women's championship, combined with the men's IC4A meet, since 1985. Because of the size of the ECAC, the meet is divided into two races, the Championship Division and the University Division. Manhattan competes in the University Division.
Lundgren completed the five-mile race in 25:27.8, just three seconds behind Temple's Mike May. Finishing up his fine season, Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.) was Manhattan's second finisher. D'Emic ended up 64th in a time of 27:11.2. Closely behind D'Emic was Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.), whose time of 27:18.4 was good enough for 71st place. Competing in his final race for the Manhattan cross country program, Milos Vuckovic (Brus, Serbia) finished 82nd in 27:27.6. Rounding out the scorers for the Jaspers was Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.), who captured 89th place in 27:36.4. Completing Manhattan's top seven were Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) (131st, 28:42.1) and Rob Tassey (Seaford, N.Y.) (148th, 29:23.4). Manhattan earned 297 team points, edging Bucknell by one point for 13th place. Temple won the University Division with 111 points. Duke captured the Championship Division title.
Due to injuries and illness, just five runners competed for the Manhattan women's team. Jangsten ran a personal-best time of 18:55.0 over 5,000 meters to finish 17th overall. Crossing the line in 88th was Jelena Rankovic (Lazarevac, Serbia), who completed the course in 20:08.5 Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) finished 137th in a time of 20:49.8, while Christine Cristobal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was 150th in 21:01.9. Rounding out Manhattan's quintet was Stephanie Dufort (Clifton Park, N.Y.) in 195th place. Dufort ran a time of 22:37.2. Manhattan's 491 team points were good enough for 19th place. Albany captured the University Division title with 49 points, while James Madison won the Championship Division.
The ECAC/IC4A Championships concluded Manhattan's 2010 cross country season. The men's and women's cross country athletes now join with the rest of the track & field teams for the indoor season, which gets underway with the Manhattan College Opener at Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday, Dec. 1.
