Scouting Report

Manhattan (1-0)

Manhattan needed to go just seven players deep on Saturday with four playing 35+ minutes to earn its season opening win at NJIT (75-70). The Jaspers received a game-high 23 points from freshman point guard Michael Alvarado, along with 19 points from senior
forward Andrew Gabriel. Gabriel was 7-for-11 (63.6%) from the field and knocked down 5-of-8 free-throws.

Sophomore wing George Beamon and junior transfer Kidani Brutus also helped anchor the Jaspers offense. Beamon went off for a
double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Brutus finished with 10 points. The backcourt duo combined for 45.5% shooting from the field and 72.2% from the free-throw line.

Junior forward Robert Martina and freshman forward Rhamel Brown gave Manhattan quality minutes off the bench,  primarily on the defensive end. Martina corralled seven rebounds, had two blocks and scored four points. Brown contributed four points, three rebounds and two blocks.

The Jaspers elevated their shooting  percentage in the second half going 52.9% from the field to finish 46.3% in the contest. Manhattan sank 24-of-33 (72.7%) free-throws in the second stanza.

Penn (1-0)

The Quakers won their season opener logging a 69-64 victory over Davidson on Saturday at the Palestra. Freshman guard Miles Cartwright led all players with 18 points on  6-for-10 shooting off the bench. Cartwright was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday.

Jack Eggleston, a 6'8", 215-pound  senior forward from Indiana, delivered a double-double finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds, to go along with four blocks. Junior guard Zack Rosen added 16 in the effort. Rosen (17.7 ppg) and Eggleston (13.0 ppg) are returning All-Ivy selections who were the top two scorers on the Quakers roster last year.

Penn is in its first official season under the direction of head coach Jerome Allen, who coached 21 games last season on an interim basis. The Quakers are coming off a 6-22  season, but return all five starters and 10  letterwinners in total.

The Quakers were selected to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll, behind conference favorite Princeton, Harvard and Cornell.
