MADISON, Conn. - On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College men's and women's cross country teams returned to Hammonasset Beach State Park, the site of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships two weeks ago, for the NCAA Northeast Regional. Competing against all of the top teams in the Northeast, the Jasper men captured 30th place. The Manhattan women finished 33rd.
The unseasonably warm weather actually made for perfect racing conditions. Running over a 10-kilometer course (2,000 meters longer than the course at the MAAC Championships) for the first time this season, Tobias Lundgren (Alta, Sweden) was once again Manhattan's top finisher on the men's side. Lundgren finished 85th in a time of 31:55.8. Following a strong showing at the MAAC Championships, Salim Corbin (Patterson, N.J.) was the second Jasper to cross the line. He placed 153rd in 33:00.1. Closely behind Corbin was Kevin D'Emic (Rockaway Point, N.Y.), who captured 164th place in 33:17.4. Returning from injury, Milos Vuckovic (Brus, Serbia) ran a time of 33:47.5 to finish 187th. The Jaspers' fifth scorer was Billy Wilkens (Kenmore, Wash.), who took 208th in 34:35.6. Rounding out Manhattan's top seven were Tom Voorheis (Syracuse, N.Y.) (215th, 35:04.0) and Tom Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) (220th, 35:15.3). Overall, Manhattan finished with 788 points.
On the women's side, Maria Jangsten (Gothenburg, Sweden) was Manhattan's top finisher for the sixth time in as many races this season. Jangsten completed the 6,000-meter course in 22:27.0, good enough for 122nd place. Jangsten's time was nearly seven seconds faster than the personal best she ran over the same course two weeks ago at the MAAC Championships. With Meghan Hayes (Brooklyn, N.Y.) still sidelined due to injury, Jelena Rankovic (Lazarevac, Serbia) was the Lady Jaspers' No. 2 finisher. Rankovic finished 185th in a time of 23:40.4. Meghan Marro (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Elizabeth Rosenberger (Ramsey, N.J.) ran together for much of the race and crossed the line virtually simultaneously. Marro placed 217th in 24:29.5, while Rosenberger was 219th in 24:33.1. Christine Cristobal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) rounded out the scorers for the Manhattan women. Cristobal finished in a time of 24:58.9, good for 229th place. Also among Manhattan's top seven were Stephanie Dufort (Clifton Park, N.Y.) (243rd, 26:19.3) and Katie O'Connell (Staten Island, N.Y.) (245th, 26:53.2). As a team, the Lady Jaspers collected 952 points.
The top two teams, as well as the top four individuals whose teams didn't qualify at the NCAA's nine regional meets qualified for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 22. Thirteen teams and 33 individuals will also be granted at-large selections. Syracuse captured both the men's and women's team titles, and will be joined at the NCAA Championships by the Iona men and Stony Brook women.
There is one meet remaining on the 2010 schedule for both teams. The ECAC/IC4A Championships will be held next Saturday, Nov. 20, at Van Cortlandt Park.
