Scouting Report
Manhattan (0-0)
Manhattan features a new look for the 2010-2011 season after losing seven players, including six seniors, two 1,000-point scorers and the 2009-2010 MAAC scoring champion. The Jaspers new line up, when healthy, consists of a balanced crop of new and old talent with significant size and agility that the program has not seen in recent years.
Returning Jaspers Andrew Gabriel and Nick Walsh have three years of playing experience under their belt in Riverdale. Gabriel is the Jaspers top returning scorer (4.8 ppg) and rebounder (3.7 rpg). Walsh, a sharp shooter from the Bronx, has appeared in 77 games during his career and has buried 47 3-pointers.
Walsh is expected to bring the leadership to a youthful backcourt which will be anchored by sophomore wing George Beamon and freshman point guard Michael Alvarado. Beamon appeared in 22 games off the bench last season and posted a team-high 44.8% field goal mark. He earned more minutes down the stretch, averaging 6.1 points over the last 10 contests. Alvarado comes to Manhattan from All Hallows where he earned 2010 All-CHSAA honoree last season.
Up front the Jaspers line up features good size with junior transfer Robert Martina (6'8") and freshman Rhamel Brown (6'6"). Martina is a 2010 All Southern Conference Honoree at Miami Dade. Brown comes to Manhattan from Transit Tech in Brooklyn where he earned First Team All-PSAL honors last year.
NJIT (0-0)
NJIT returns 90% of its scoring and 83% of its rebounds and was picked to finish first in the Great West Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Highlanders bring back their top three scorers from last season in guards Jheryl Wilson, Chris Flores and Isaiah Wilkerson.
Wilson, a 6'3" senior, led the Highlanders averaging 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds last season and is a 2010-2011 First Team All-Conference selection. Flores returns for his sophomore campaign after ranking second on the team with 14.1 points per game in his first year with the program. Wilkerson is a versatile player who played every position, except center, last year. The 6'3", 215 lb. junior put up 13.0 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest.
Head coach Jim Engles returns to the helm for his third season, coming off his most successful campaign during his time in Newark. Engles returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad which posted 10 wins and a 4-8 record in the Great West Conference.
