RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Senior midfielder Leah Loguidice scored two goals to help Fordham (1-6-1) top the Manhattan women's soccer team 3-0 in the 20th all-time meeting of the cross-Bronx rivalry. Loguidice tallied the game winning goal in the 13th minute as the Lady Jaspers fell in its second home match of the season.
"It was a disappointing effort at home, although I don't think the score was indicative of the overall game," stated fifth year head coach Sean Driscoll. "I felt we defended well, but just had some difficult breaks."
The Rams took a one goal advantage just over 12 minutes into the contest when Loguidice tracked down a deep pass in the left corner of the field and managed to squeak a deflected shot inside the right pipe. Despite the mishap, Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Kara Davis managed to keep the Lady Jaspers within striking distance as she came up with four first half saves to keep it a 1-0 match as the squads entered intermission.
Manhattan pushed forward and attacked in the second half, but could not find the lucky strike. The Lady Jaspers best opportunity to tie the match at one apiece came in the 67th minute when junior forward Caroline Morse launched a shot from outside the box, which ricocheted off the crossbar. Freshman Allison Pfeiffer was there for the rebound, but got tangled with the Rams goalkeeper Jen Byer and could not punch the ball in the net.
Byer made two saves in the match to earn the her first shutout of the season.
Fordham extended its lead to 2-0 in the 79th minute when Loguidice struck for the second time, again on a long pass which found its way through the Lady Jaspers defense. Then in the 85th minute, the Rams added their third goal of the game when freshman Annie Worden notched the first goal of her career off a feed from classmate Cara Rooney.
Davis was credited with the loss and fell to 3-4 on the season. She split halves in net with senior keeper Caitlin Trupiano.
Manhattan (3-4) looks to rebound on Sunday when the Lady Jaspers host Wager at Gaelic Park. Kick off is set for 10 a.m. Last year, Manhattan and Wagner battled to a 1-1 tie in Staten Island.
