COLLEGE PARK, Md. ? The Manhattan College softball team (1-3) concluded the Maryland Round Robin with a pair of games at Taylor Stadium on Sunday. The Lady Jaspers fell to Dartmouth (5-3), 5-4 in eight innings, in the morning, then lost to Gardner-Webb (6-8), 8-0, in the tournament's consolation game in the afternoon.
In their first game of the day, the Lady Jaspers went into extra innings for the second straight contest. Dartmouth got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the first before Manhattan got one back in the top of the third on Ashley Rampino's (Manalapan, N.J.) RBI single. The Big Green added single runs in the third and fifth to take a 4-1 advantage.
The Lady Jaspers began their comeback effort with two runs in the top of the sixth. Rampino singled to center leading off the inning, and Kara Cokeley (Pearl River, N.Y.) was sent in to pinch run. Cokeley moved to second on a single by Nicole Michel (Massapequa, N.Y.) and scored on Danielle Just's (Woodcliff Lake, N.J.) base hit. After Just moved to second on a wild pitch, Michel stole home for Manhattan's third run of the game.
Manhattan tied the game with a run in the top of the seventh. Kristina Walraven (Thompson Ridge, N.Y.) got the rally started with a single, then moved to second on a ground out. Rampino followed with a single up the middle that knocked in Walraven and tied the game. Michel singled to give the Lady Jaspers runners on first and second with two outs, but Carla Velasquez (Miami, Fla.) grounded to first to end the inning. Dartmouth loaded the bases with two down in the bottom of the seventh, but Erika Sullivan (Bay Shore, N.Y.) got Leigha Clarkson to fly out to end the inning.
After the Lady Jaspers failed to score in the top of the eighth, Dartmouth moved the winning run to third on Hillary Barker's sacrifice bunt. Pinch runner Jackie Begay then scored on an error to give the Big Green a 5-4 victory.
Rampino and Michel each went 3-for-4 in the contest for Manhattan. Walraven added two of the Lady Jaspers' 11 hits. Sullivan (0-2) took another tough luck, extra-innings loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) and seven hits while striking out four and walking five in 7.1 innings.
Molly Khalil had a 2-for-3 day at the plate and drove in three runs for the Big Green. Alyssa Parker also had two hits, and Kirsten Costello scored twice for Dartmouth. Kat Hicks went the first 5.1 innings in the circle, yielding three runs and eight hits while striking out three. Barker (2-2) earned the win after giving up one run and three hits with a strikeout in 2.2 innings.
Manhattan and Gardner-Webb went into extra innings scoreless on Saturday, but that was not the case on Sunday, as the Bulldogs erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first. Melody Harrell, who went 2-for-4 against Manhattan on Saturday, got the inning started with a single to left, and the first five Gardner-Webb hitters all reached base. With the Bulldogs leading 1-0, Angie Walls knocked in a pair of runs on a single to left. Ashley Whitlock followed with an RBI single, then Melinda Dulkowski, the ninth Gardner-Webb batter of the inning, belted a two-run double to left center to end the rally. The Bulldogs added a pair in the fourth on Harrell's two-run homer.
The contest was called after five innings because of the eight-run game-ending rule.
Cindy Boomhower (2-0), who held the Lady Jaspers to just six hits in eight innings on Saturday, was just as dominant on Sunday. She allowed just three hits?singles by Velasquez and Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) and a pinch-hit double by Kaitlin Rodriguez (Dumont, N.J.)?and struck out seven Lady Jaspers in five innings to earn her second victory over Manhattan in as many days. Melissa Donnelly (Long Beach, N.Y.) (1-1) settled down after the rough first inning. She retired the Bulldogs in order in the second and third before yielding Harrell's homer in the fourth. Donnelly allowed eight runs and nine hits (seven in the first inning).
Harrell went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Gardner-Webb. Dulkowski went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Walls was 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
