Riverdale, N.Y. -- A flurry of goals in the first portion of the first half and another in the final portion of the second half propelled the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team to a 14-10 win over the University of California- Davis Tuesday afternoon at Gaelic Park.  With the win, the Lady Jaspers enter MAAC play with a 5-2 non-conference record

 

Manhattan freshman Chrissy Gutenberger paced the Lady Jasper attack with a five-goal effort.  Phelicia Van Overbeke and Julia Lavelle chipped in with a hat trick apiece, while Helen Kerrisk had two goals and Elizabeth Dugan had one.  Caralyn Hickey, Kerrisk and VanOverbeke had one assist each for the Lady J's.  Kerrisk and VanOverbeke also contributed three important draw controls each and Kerrisk had four ground balls.

 

Defensively for Manhattan, Keri Morrison had four caused turnovers, to go along with two ground balls. 

 

Leading the way For UC-Davis, Britt Farquharson had three goals and Molly LaPolla had four assists.

 

Manhattan came out of the gate very strongly, exploding for five unanswered goals in the first seven plus minutes of the match.  The teams then exchanged goals for the rest of the half, with UC-Davis getting a bit of the momentum and the teams entered the halftime lockerroom with Manhattan having an 8 to 5 edge.

 

UC-Davis brought the deficit to 8-7 with two goals in the first seven or so minutes of the second half, but at the 12:45 mark of the second half the Lady Jaspers started a 5-2 run to take the score to 14-9 with a bit under four minutes to go in the match.  A late Aggie goal with 2:13 to go in the game made the final score 14-10 Manhattan.

 

UC-Davis outshot Manhattan 38-31, but Manhattan goalkeeper Allison Brown came up big in net with 12 saves. 

 

Manhattan starts its conference Friday evening at 7 p.m. with a home match versus Marist that starts at 7 p.m.
