Riverdale, N.Y. - The Manhattan College men's soccer succumbed to Loyola University 4-1 in the final game of the 2009 season. Prior to the game, Manhattan's seven seniors were honored on Senior Day. The seniors honored in pre-game ceremonies were: James Gannon, Nicholas Patrikis, Fabricio Pesantez, Paul Rolston, Fernando Segares, Stephen Van Rossem and Nick White.
The game began with Manhattan getting most of the opportunities, outshooting Loyola 4-0 during the match's first 20 minutes. But, on their first shot of the game, Loyola tallied off a set piece in the 21st minute to go ahead 1-0, with Kevin Curran placing a corner kick into the middle of the box, which Glenn Leitch redirected with a header into the left corner of the net for his sixth goal of the season.
Loyola extended its advantage to two with less than two minutes to play before halftime, with Curran carrying the ball from his left back position and crossing it into the box where Phil Bannister finished into the left side of the net for his third goal of the year.
Early in the second half, a Bannister shot was saved by Manhattan goalkeeper Chris Todd, but the rebound bounched off Todd onto the foot of Mark Jaskolski. The sophomore forward put away his shot to give Loyola a 3-0 lead in the 59th minute.
Manhattan got one back in the 71st minute when two seniors combined for a tally. Patrikis received a Nick White service from the left side and lofted a goal into the top left corner of the net to score his second goal in as many games.
But then Jaskolski added his second goal of the game in the 82nd minute to provide the final margin. The assist went to Bannister..
For Loyola goalkeeper Zach Kane earned his first collegiate win in goal for the Greyhounds. The freshman made seven saves against the Jaspers, who were credited with 16 shots in the match to Loyola's nine. Todd had two saves in goal for Manhattan.
Manhattan ends its season with a record of 1-18-0 overall and 0-9 in the MAAC. With the win, Loyola (now 9-7-3 overall ande 6-2-1 in the MAAC) clinched the No. 2 seed in next weekend's MAAC Championships at Fairfield University.
