Box Score
RIVERDALE, N.Y. - There was no way Saturday's match was going to match the excitement of Friday night's. All the Manhattan College volleyball team wanted was the same end result, a 3-0 victory. The contest was a 3-0 sweep, but unfortunately for the Lady Jaspers (7-16, 3-9 MAAC), it was Saint Peter's (7-15, 4-7 MAAC) that came out on top, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Draddy Gymnasium.
Saint Peter's took an early 3-0 lead in the first set, but Manhattan pulled back within one when a Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) service ace made it 8-7. After the Peahens increased their lead to 11-8, a 7-0 run on Shannon Doheny's serve opened up a nine-point Saint Peter's advantage. Manhattan got back within five at 20-15, but a 3-0 Saint Peter's rally put the Peahens within two points of winning the set. The Lady Jaspers responded with five straight points to make it 23-20, but Saint Peter's closed out a 25-21 win to take the early lead in the match.
In the second set, Manhattan built the early lead, using a 7-0 rally to turn a 3-3 tie into a 10-3 advantage. After a kill by Rita Welsh (Collegeville, Pa.) put the Lady Jaspers up 15-8, Saint Peter's scored 17 of the final 22 points to win the set. Manhattan held the lead at 17-15 before three straight Saint Peter's points put the Peahens in front, 18-17. With the score tied at 20-20, back-to-back Yomi Angulo aces sparked a 5-0 Saint Peter's run to end the set. The Peahens took the set 25-20 to pull in front 2-0 in the match.
After the Peahens pulled in front 5-1 to start the third set, Manhattan rallied for seven of the next eight points to take an 8-6 lead. A Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) kill put Manhattan back in front, 10-9, but Saint Peter's responded with a 5-1 run to regain a 15-11 advantage and seize control. Saint Peter's increased its lead to six at 21-15 before a 4-1 spurt pulled the Lady Jaspers back within three, 22-19. That's as close as Manhattan would get, however, as the Peahens closed out a 3-0 victory with a 25-20 third set win.
Rahey paced Manhattan with 11 kills and added eight digs. Welsh recorded 10 kills, and Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) notched her second straight double-double with 27 assists and 12 digs. Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 13 digs, while Bies registered 10 digs. As a team, the Lady Jaspers hit .078 (28-18-128) in the match.
Saint Peter's had 40 kills to Manhattan's 28 and six aces to the Lady Jaspers' two. Stephanie Phillips and Kim Mendoza each recorded nine kills to lead the Peahens. Mendoza also posted 10 digs. Katie McFadden tallied seven kills and added a match-high 19 digs, while Angulo notched 17 digs and two aces. Doheny registered a double-double with 24 assists and 10 digs. The Peahens hit .198 (40-14-131) as a team.
Manhattan continues its season-long five-match homestand on Thursday night, when Hofstra (8-17) visits Riverdale for a 7 p.m. non-conference tilt. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but was moved because of Dr. Brennan O'Donnell's inauguration as Manhattan College president, which will take place in Draddy Gymnasium on Wednesday afternoon.
