LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College volleyball team traveled to Loudonville on Sunday to battle the Siena Saints but the Lady Jaspers just didn't have enough in them as fell 3-0. Manhattan (6-13, 2-6 MAAC) was unable to take any of the sets as Siena won them 25-16, 25-16, 25-23. This puts Manhattan at ninth in the MAAC.
The Lady Jaspers opened the first set with three kills in a row and kept it within a point or two until halfway through the set. Manhattan had five kills and three errors when they called a timeout but were unable to use this to regain their composure. It was instead Siena who took advantage of this break. They came out fighting and the Saints were able to jump ahead and take the set 25-16 with a kill by Jasmine Brown to secure the win. The Lady Jaspers committed eight errors in the set while Siena only allowed one.
Manhattan's Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) started the second set off with a strong service ace followed by a kill by Casey Tidwell (Redlands, Calif) to put Manhattan up 2-0 in the set. Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) had 2 big kills to add to Manhattan's early dominance in the set but Siena did not let this last for long. They came back with five kills of their own to force Manhattan into calling a timeout. Coming off this short break, the two teams went back and forth with kills until the Lady Jaspers committed three errors in a row putting them behind 17-6. Siena went on to win the math on a kill by Burgandy McCurty at 25-16.
The third set opened with a kill from Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) and a service error by Siena putting the Lady Jaspers up 2-0. Siena was able to put some points on the board and the match was back and forth the rest of the time. Manhattan pulled ahead again on another kill by Rahey and two service errors by the Saints. Manhattan kept the lead until the last two plays of the set. A kill by Stutner put the Lady Jaspers at 23-22 and in good position to come away with a win. Siena answered with a kill and a service ace to jump back ahead 24-23 and a final kill by Brown secured them the victory.
Siena had 8 team blocks on the day while Manhattan only came away with two. Rahey and Strutner led the team in kills with 13 and seven respectively while Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) led with 13 digs. Laura Bellotti (Dix Hills, N.Y.) had a team high of 19 assists. Manhattan hit .119 (34-20-188) in the match.
The Lady Jaspers continue their road trip against MAAC teams Canisius, Niagara and Rider. They return to Draddy Gymnasium on Oct. 24 when they take on Saint Peter's.
