Queens, N.Y. (April 23, 2008) ? The Manhattan College Softball team fell to local rival St. John's University 4-3 in a single game match-up today. The Lady Jaspers were up early, but fell victim to a sixth inning rally by the Red Storm.
The Lady Jaspers struck first in the top of the second as Amanda Genovese drove in Danielle Just to give Manhattan an early 1-0 lead. The Lady J defense was on the top of its game, mainly due to the stellar pitching of Melissa Donnelly. Donnelly pitched five scoreless innings, giving Manhattan the edge.
The Lady Jaspers weren't done scoring as in the top of the sixth, after Jaci Rahey came into to pinch hit and drew a walk. Danielle Just then got up with 1 out and crushed a two-run homerun to make in a 3-0 game in favor of Manhattan.
But the Red Storm rallied, as they put up four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a one run lead going into the final inning of play. The Lady J's could not spark a rally of their own as St. John's went on to win the game.
Donnelly finished the game pitching 5.2 innings, giving up three hits, one earned run and striking out two. Just went 2-3 from the plate, driving in two runs. Kristina Walraven also finished the day 2-3.
The Lady Jaspers will return to action tomorrow, Thursday April 24 as they will travel to take on La Salle University in their make-up game from a previously canceled match. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m
