RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Sophomore right-hander Tom Costigan and freshman lefty Dan Forman pitched complete games leading the Manhattan College baseball team (9-11-1) to a sweep of LeMoyne (9-14) in its doubleheader this afternoon at Alumni Diamond Field in Fairfield, Conn. The Jaspers took a 4-1 victory in game one, and earned a 4-2 comeback win in the second contest of the set. Sophomore standout Kevin Nieto anchored Manhattan's (9-11-1) offensive attack going 4-for-7 on the afternoon with two doubles and scoring three runs.
In game one, Manhattan struck first in the top of the second when freshman Anthony Armenio singled to center field to score senior catcher Dom Lombardi who walked earlier in the inning. Armenio went 1-for-3 from the plate.
Senior outfielder Eric Nieto worked his way around the bases in the third inning after reaching base by a walk. Eric Nieto stole second, and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Dolphins sole run came in the fifth when Chris Edmondson, a sophomore outfielder, homered over the right field fence. The blast cut Manhattan's advantage to 2-1.
This proved to be as close as LeMoyne would get as the Jaspers tacked on a run in both the eight and ninth innings stretching the lead to 4-1.
Costigan was brilliant on the mound allowing just four hits, an earned run and struck out six over nine innings of work. The effort marked Costigan's first complete game of his collegiate career.
The Jaspers rallied from 2-0 deficit by the end of the third inning, and eventually stole a 4-2 victory in the second game of its doubleheader. Forman also pitched his first career complete game as he limited LeMoyne to six hits and struck out five over seven innings of action.
Manhattan eliminated its early deficit in the bottom of the fourth by scoring a pair of runs to even the game at 2-2. Kevin Nieto led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Dolphins' starter Luke Nellis loaded the bases by hitting Chad Salem and Lombardi by pitches, and then allowed Kevin Nieto to score after walking Ruben Perez. Salem scored soon after on an error.
The Jaspers added the decisive runs in the fifth inning courtesy of a Kevin Nieto RBI double and a Lombardi RBI single. Lombardi finished the doubleheader going 2-for-4 from the plate.
Eric Nieto also delivered a solid performance over two starts in right field this afternoon. He went 3-for-7 and scored a run.
Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday for its non-conference match up at UAlbany. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
