Manhattan Storms Past Baruch in Exhibition Game

RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Chris Smith delivered 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting, while Darryl Crawford added 20 as the Manhattan men's basketball team coasted to a 110-42 victory over Baruch College in an exhibition match up this evening at Draddy Gymnasium. The sharp shooting Jaspers went 65.2% (43-66) from the field and 53.8% (14-26) beyond the arc.

 

Senior forward Devon Austin and Smith got the Jaspers rolling early as the duo propelled the squad to a 19-7 advantage just over seven minutes into the game. Austin finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

 

Crawford and Jamel Ferguson contributed extra offensive firepower coming off the bench late in the first half. Crawford had 12 points by intermission on 6-for-9 shooting. Ferguson dished in seven points.

 

The Jaspers led 50-17 at the half.

 

Manhattan carried its hot shooting into the second stanza. Patrick Bouli buried his second 3-pointer of the night less than a minute into the half to continue the surge.

 

Bouli finished with six points, dished out three assists and did not commit a turnover.

 

Sophomore guard Nick Walsh also found his stroke in the second half as he knocked down back-to-back treys. The second 3-pointer came at the 13:53 mark and gave Manhattan a 70-19 lead.

 

Walsh dished out a team-high four assists, which included a fast break, alley-oop off the back board for Smith, who sent down a two handed jam. Ferguson also recorded four assists on the evening.

 

Walk-ons Victor Jackson and Marty Higgins got in on the scoring action late in the contest, which energized the crowd. Jackson buried back-to-back 3-pointers and Higgins connected on a midrange jumper.

 

Brandon Adams and Herve Banogle also scored in double-figures. Adams had 10 points and Banogle went off for 11 on 5-for-6 shooting. Banogle grabbed a game-high six rebounds.

 

Manhattan's feisty defense forced 15 turnovers, while the squad committed just five. The Jaspers recorded 23 assists, 12 steals, outrebounded Baruch 37-23, and connected on 10-of-12 (83.3%) free-throw attempts.

 

Manhattan completes its preseason schedule on Wednesday when its hosts Pace University in an exhibition at Draddy Gymnasium. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
