STONY BROOK'S PITCHING KEYS SWEEP OF SOFTBALL

Stony Brook, N.Y. (March 29, 2007)?In their final tune-up before beginning MAAC play this weekend, the Lady Jaspers dropped 3-2 and 8-0 decisions to the Seawolves this afternoon. In game one, Alysaa Struzenberg and Christina Voth threw a combined two-hitter as Stony Brook rallied for the win. In game two, Sarah Hoffman twirled a shutout and the Stony Brook bats came alive for eight runs.

 

Game one remained scoreless for three innings before Manhattan jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the fourth. Danielle Just singled to leadoff the inning, and Stephanie Gozdziewki bunted her over to second. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Just came home on a wild pitch with Amanda Genovese at the plate. Stony Brook answered back in bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Kelly Oberto off starting pitcher Kristin Gelsleichter. In the top of the fifth, the Lady Jaspers manufactured a run to reclaim the lead. Devon Gustafson drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second after a sacrifice bunt by Kerry Cook. Gustafson advanced to third on a passed ball, and after a walk to Liz Strein, scored on a wild pitch with Lynzie Phillips batting

 

Manhattan wouldn't lead for long however, as Stony Brook put up two runs in its half of the inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Marissa Fleury singled into right field to score both runners, giving the Seawolves a 3-2 lead. Voth, who relieved Struzenberg with one out in the fifth inning, retired eight batters in a row to pick up the win.

 

In game two, Stony Brook plated two runs in the third to lead 2-0 as Hoffman silenced Manhattan's bats. Still, Manhattan starter Liz Pennino kept the Lady Jaspers in the game until the fifth inning when Stony Brook broke the game open with six runs. Hoffman picked up the win for Stony Brook with five shutout innings, striking out five.

 

Manhattan returns to action this Saturday when they host Marist College at Branch Brook Park in Newark, N.J. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
