New York, N.Y. (February 2, 2007)?A mix of current and former Jaspers represented Manhattan Track and Field at the prestigious 100th Millrose Games on Friday, and one of them came away with a championship.
With current Jaspers Seid Mujanovic and Paul Peulich competing in the same field, former Manhattan standout Jake Freeman won the men's weight throw with a top mark of 21.67m. Freeman, who is now competing for the New York Athletic Club, was a two-time NCAA National Champion while in Riverdale. The 2004 graduate and eight-time NCAA All-American won the 2003 NCAA weight throw title and 2004 NCAA hammer throw crown.
Although they still have ways to go in order to match Freeman, Mujanovic and Peulich finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the event with the rookie Mujanovic setting a new career best. In only his first semester as a Jasper, Mujanovic posted a top throw of 17.85m. Peulich, who posted his personal best in the event by winning at last year's MAAC Championships, was only one centimeter behind his teammate at 17.84m.
Manhattan senior Joe Cruz was also in action at the Games, claiming fifth in the men's college field of the 60m dash (7.36). A local product from New York City's LaSalle High School, Cruz has had a good portion of his success as a Jasper in the hurdles. The senior has a MAAC Championship to his name in the 110m hurdles and has also competed at the IC4A Championships on a number of occasions.
