Riverdale, N.Y. (November 10, 2007) ? The Manhattan College women's swim team capped off an historic weekend that found it winning all six of their dual meets by taking a quad meet against St. Peter's College, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Canisius College.
After going 3-0 Friday versus Mills College, Baruch College and St. Joseph's College of Long Island, the Lady Jaspers came back on Saturday, scoring a 55-40 win over St. Peter's, a 57-38 win over Canisius and a 59-15 win against NJIT.
“This is the first time I can remember that we won all six meets in a single weekend,” said Manhattan swim coach Walter Olsewski. The team, now with a record of 11-3, is just one win short of tying the single season record for wins, which was set last year. The weekend performance took Coach Olsewski's 11-year coaching record at Manhattan College to 99-53.
In the Saturday meet, after getting touched out by St. Peter's in the first event, the Lady Jaspers stormed ahead when junior Megan O'Keefe took the 200 free and were never headed off. O'Keefe won the 200 free in a time of 2:07.19.
Manhattan got great performances from senior Maura McGowan, who won the 100 free in 58.24 and anchored the clinching 200 free relay, and from sophomore Catherine Chan, who won the 50 free in 26.6 and swam the lead leg in the 200 free relay. The 200 free relay team of Chan, freshman Debbie Atwell, sophomore Kellie Monaco and McGowan swam the event in 1:49.71.
The Lady Jaspers also got outstanding freshman swims from Kayla Hutzler in the medley relay and 100 breast (1:15.33), and from Atwell in the 200 IM (2:33.98) and 100 back (1:12:53), as well as her performance in the 200 free relay.
The Lady Jaspers next meet will be Friday evening at 6:30 against the Hunter Hawks at Riverdale Country School. The Lady Js next Saturday at 2 p.m. at home will take on Siena and St. Peter's in a meet that will honor seniors Michelle LaTouche and Maura McGowan, who are both co-captains.
