Philadelphia, Pa. (March 15, 2006) - Drexel (3-8) freshman Ashlee Veilleux took a no-hitter and a four-run lead into the sixth inning, but Manhattan's (6-4) Liz Strein led off with a double down the leftfield line. This opened the flood gates for the Jaspers who went on to score four runs in the frame and knot the score at 4-4. Walks and fielding miscues in the seventh put Manhattan on top for the 6-4 victory.
The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lady Jaspers' pitcher Jill Medea plunked Lisa Williams with the bases loaded to force in a run. The Dragons pushed the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the third when an infield single by Brianne Brown loaded the bases for Lena Aiken. Aiken, the Dragons' second leading hitter, smacked a bases-clearing triple to right center for the four-run advantage.
Drexel's defense played a big role in preserving the no-hitter through five innings. Williams laid out to catch a dying line drive in centerfield in the first inning. When Veilleux put two runners on with walks in the second inning, Drexel got out of it when Molly Dacey picked the runner off of first base with a quick throw and keyed a pair of infield run-downs resulting in a double-play to erase the threat. Dacey's arm came up big again in the fifth, negating a Veilleux by throwing out Kerry Cook trying to steal second.
Amanda Heyser relieved Veilleux in the sixth inning and took the loss despite not surrendering an earned run. Veilleux gave up four runs on three hits and seven walks and struck out three in her five innings of work. Heyser worked two innings and gave up one hit, three walks while fanning two batters in two innings.
Aiken went 2-for-3 in the game with three RBIs and Veilleux helped her cause by going 2-for-4 at the plate. For the Jaspers, Tina Buyea went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Game two was called after an inning and two-thirds due to darkness.
