Hoboken, N.J. (October 20, 2006)-Freshman Catherine Chan opened up her collegiate career and the Manhattan Women's Swimming season by earning a key victory in the 50 Yard Freestyle and taking second in the 100 Yard Freestyle to help the Lady Jaspers defeat Stevens Institute of Technology in a dual meet on Friday night.

Chan claimed first place in the 50 Yard Free with a time of 26.18s, which was more than two seconds better than the second place time. That runner-up time came from another Manhattan freshman as Megan Goldrick clocked in at 28.20s. Goldrick also helped the Lady Jaspers to victory by swimming the final leg of the 200 Yard Medley Relay, which Manhattan won with a time of 2:01.27.

Chan's time of 58.28s in the 100 Yard Free was second only to her junior teammate Maura McGowan. McGowan, who broke Manhattan's school record in the event at last year's MAAC Championship with a time of 56.33s, clocked in at 57.50s on Friday evening.

In addition to winning the 100 Yard Free, McGowan earned points for the team by taking second in the 200 Yard Free. Manhattan sophomore, and record holder, Megan O'Keefe won the event by touching in at 2:04.72.

Manhattan, who won by an official tally of 113-84, will continue its opening weekend by competing in the McCarthy Invitational on October 22.
