WOMEN'S SOCCER CRUISE TO VICTORY OVER DELAWARE STATE 7-0

Riverdale, N.Y. (October 11, 2006)-Despite playing in heavy rain throughout much of the contest, the Lady Jaspers offense could not be slowed down as they eased to victory over Delaware State 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon.

All seven goals were scored by different players. Five players scored their first goals of the season, Samantha Stahl, senior Jess Garcia, Brittany Duhamel, Erin Kennedy, and Jaclyn Levie.

Freshman Courtney Hughes was a big contributor as well, assisting on three of the final four goals. With the three assists, Hughes tied a program record for assists in a game, held by three players, the last time coming from Kristen Stroppel in 2001

Freshman Courtney McMahon recorded her ninth assist of the season on Alexandra Konneker's goal in the first half. The assist broke Manhattan's single season assist record of eight, previously held by Stroppel set in 2001.

The contest was scoreless for much of the first half until Duhamel broke through with her first goal of the season at 28:05. Less than two minutes later, Konneker notched her fourth goal of the season, with assists coming from McMahon and Chrissy Reina.

In the second half Manhattan broke the game open. Garcia took a pass back from Rachel Pannullo and fired a shot from outside the goalie box that beat the keeper up top.

Freshman Amanda McCormick made the score 4-0 in favor of Manhattan, beating Delaware State's goalie Ashley Rickard with a shot inside the box. Jaclyn Levie made the score 5-0, scoring directly off a corner kick with a twisting ball that went off the hands off Rickard.

With less than five minutes to go, Kennedy took a pass back from Pannullo, gathered herself and drilled a shot from 10 yards away to increase the lead to 6-0. Finally, at the 88:16 mark, Stahl found herself in open space, and scored from 12 yards away.

Stahl led the team in shots with seven, and also had an assist. Manhattan recorded 28 shots during the game and held the Hornets to just one shot on the afternoon. The shutout was the Lady Jaspers' sixth of the year, which ties a team record set in 1992 and 2002.

After playing their final non-conference game, the Lady Jaspers now enter a crucial stretch of their season. With four points in the MAAC, Manhattan is tied for fourth place in the conference with Iona and Canisius with five games to go. The top four teams make the postseason MAAC tournament.

Next up for Manhattan is a date on the road with Fairfield. The game kicks off at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night.
