New York, NY (February 18, 2005)- The men and women's Track & Field teams won their ninth consecutive MAAC Indoor Championship titles. The men won with 186 points beating second place finisher Rider by 41 points. Iona came in third place (93) and Marist finished fourth (42). The Lady Jaspers won with 196 points. Rider finished in second just 3.5 points behind Manhattan. Marist College finished third (98.50) and Iona captured fourth (80).
Freshman Milan Jotanovic was named the 2005 MAAC Male Field Events Most Outstanding Performer. Sophomore Tiina Magi was named the 2005 MAAC Female Field Events Most Outstanding Performer. Coach Dan Mecca was honored as the MAAC Co-Coach of the Year for both the men and women.
The men's weight throw started off the meet with force. The Jaspers won 28 points capturing first to fourth place. Winning the event was junior Michael Freeman with a toss of 19.81m. Junior Zoran Loncar threw 19.66m capturing second place. The Jasper's swept up the one, two and three spots in the Shot Put starting with freshman Milan Jotanovic. Jotanovic threw the shot 18.10m breaking the MAAC Championship record by 1.15m. Finishing in second place was junior Anders Constantin (14.76m) and freshman Richard Reuter (14.59m).
In the Triple Jump, freshman Dexter Jules led the pack leaping 14.58m. Sophomore Andrew Pellet leaped just .01m less for a second place finish. Sophomore Nick Newman captured his first Long Jump title jumping 7.08m. Earning third place was Jules with a leap of 6.96m. Sophomore Christano Johnson competed in his first ever Indoor MAAC Championship breaking the meet record by .05m with his vertical jump of 2.16m. Sophomore Chris Sole placed second with his jump of 2.01m. Senior Nils Petterson captured first place in the Pole Vault with his vault of 4.25m.
In the mile run Tyler Raymond finished in third place with a time of 4:07.21. Raymond also competed in the 800m Run finishing .02 seconds behind second place finisher Andre Fearon from Rider. Finishing in second place in the 55m Hurdles with a personal best time of 7.69 was sophomore Joseph Cruz.
The men's Distance Medley Relay finished third with a time of 10:33.17. Members included, senior Matt Reilly, junior Tyler Raymond, and sophomores Joshua Conklin and Margus Must. Conklin, sophomores Doug DeMarco, Michael Foley and Paul Pappitto competed in the 4x400m Relay finishing in third place with a time of 3:24.65.
Junior Marina Liander broke the MAAC Championship record in the Weight Throw this afternoon with her toss of 17.35m. This is the third consecutive championship title for Liander. Liander also competed in the Shot Put placing third with her toss of 12.59m. Winning the MAAC Pole Vault Championship Title for the second year in a row was Manhattan's junior Jenna Daly. Daly, who holds the MAAC meet record, vaulted 3.19m for the win.
Sophomore Tiina Magi won her first Triple Jump title after leaping 11.55m. Manhattan captured the first three places in the High Jump. Finishing in first place was freshman Caitlyn Kjolhede with her vertical leap of 1.65m. Magi (1.65m) finished in second place and junior Jessica Jansson (1.60m) captured third.
In the running events, capturing second place in the 55m Dash for the Lady J's was freshman Jasmine Rogers. Rogers finished in 7.42 seconds. In the 400m Dash, freshman Erin Gregorek finished third with a time of 1:00.08.
The women's Distance Medley Relay took third finishing in 12:45.95. The team members included, Daly, senior Rachel McGee, junior Marissa Olivieri and freshman Eryka Perreault. Freshman Lauren Cervino, Amy Colantuono, Gregorek and Gellar finished second in the 4x400m Relay with a time of 4:07.89.
Manhattan competes again on Friday, February 25 at the USATF Championships held in Boston, MA at the Boston Armory. Starting time slated for 9 a.m.
