Baltimore, Md. (December 11, 2005)- Manhattan completed its Foxes and Hounds MAAC weekend sweep this afternoon, defeating host Loyola, 85-73, at Reitz Arena on the Loyola campus. The Jaspers, who raced past the Marist Red Foxes on Friday, took a lead they would never relinquish nine minutes into the game to improve to 2-0 in conference play, and 2-4 overall. Loyola, who entered the game unbeaten, falls to 5-1, 1-1 in MAAC play. CJ Anderson posted his second double-double of the season, scoring a team-high 20 points while pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Greyhounds scored the game's first five points, and led by five, 10-5, with 16:59 remaining in the opening stanza before Manhattan used a 9-4 run to knot the score at 14-14 at the 13:07 mark. With the Jaspers holding a two point lead, 28-26, with 5:24 to play before the break, Manhattan used a 7-0 run, highlighted by five straight points from Jason Wingate, to take a nine point lead, 35-26, with 2:53 left before halftime. Loyola managed to cut the lead to three with 32 ticks left, but Wingate connected in a three pointer just before the buzzer to send Manhattan into the locker room with a six point, 40-34, lead.
In the second half, the Greyhounds closed to within three, 51-48, following an Andre Collins trifecta, but Manhattan answered with a 13-6 spurt to push the lead to double-digits, 64-54, with 4:53 left in the game. A conventional three-point play from Collins with 3:48 left brought the lead back under 10, 70-61, but Manhattan made 11-13 from the line down the stretch to ice the game.
Anderson added a Manhattan season-high six assists to his double-double, and was joined in double-figures by Wingate (19 points), Arturo Dubois (14 points, nine rebounds, four blocks), and Jeff Xavier (11 points).
Collins led all scorers with 39 points, but only one other Greyhound reached double-figures in scoring, as Michael Tuck scored all 11 of his points in the first half.
Manhattan takes time off for exams, and gets back in action with a two game Midwest swing, taking on North Dakota State on Sunday, December 18 and South Dakota State on Tuesday, December 20.
