Riverdale, N.Y. (October 7, 2005)--Manhattan Men's Soccer dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 overtime decision to Marist College on Friday afternoon at Gaelic Park in the MAAC-opener for both teams.
After a scoreless first half, Manhattan sophomore
Javier Escobedo, who tallied a game-high three shots on goal, broke through in the 48th minute with his first goal of the season to give the Jaspers a 1-0 advantage. Junior midfielder
Justin Schultz earned the assist on the play, as he found a cutting Escobedo in the penalty area to set up the score.
The Jaspers made the lead hold up for over 28 minutes, but Marist answered back with the equalizer in the 76th minute when Ben Castor took a pass from Steve Fantuzzo and put it past Manhattan keeper
David Mires.
Castor also contributed to the game-winning tally, as the senior forward blasted a shot on goal in the 99th minute. Mires, who stopped seven of the nine shots he faced, made a diving save, but could not completely corral the ball. As the ball trickled inches away to Mires' right, Marist junior Anthony Graci flew into the box and put home the rebound to end the game.
The Jaspers return to action on Sunday, October 9, as they play host to MAAC foe Siena College at Gaelic Park. Kickoff is at 10:00 a.m.
