Riverdale, N.Y. (October 30, 2005)- For the second time in their last three meetings, Manhattan and Loyola battled to draw in a MAAC match, as each side came away with a conference point after a 1-1, double overtime tie this morning at Gaelic Park. Manhattan seniors
Brian Lundy,
Kevin Martin, and
Joe Pumo were honored before the match.
Loyola tallied an early marker to take a 1-0 lead just 5:01 into the match. Off a scramble in front of the Manhattan net, the Greyhounds' Ray Hassett found the ball at his feet and put it to the upper corner.
The two teams played even for the remainder of the opening stanza, with the Jaspers holding a slight edge in shots (8-7) and corners (6-5), as Loyola carried the 1-0 lead into the break.
In the second half, the action again was evenly distributed, but as the half wore on, Manhattan's countering offensive pressure began to produce quality scoring chances. The Jaspers nearly got on the board with 16 minutes remaining, as
Anthony Cacciola's blast from inside the 18-yard box hit the post and caromed away.
The Jaspers pressure finally paid off at the 81:37 mark.
Joe Pumo passed the ball to
Mike Barbuto, who's crossing pass was settled by
Javier Escobedo, who fired the ball past the Loyola keeper to knot the score at 1-1.
The score remained 1-1 through the rest of regulation, as Manhattan went into overtime for the second straight match.
Loyola had the best scoring chance in the two overtimes, almost ending the game with two minutes left in the first overtime, but the Greyhounds' goal was waved off after a Loyola player was whistled for a hand ball prior to the goal being scored.
David Mired tallied three saves in net for Manhattan, while Justin Chelland recorded seven stops for Loyola.
The Jaspers will get back in action on Wednesday, November 2, playing their final home game of the season against Siena College in a MAAC tilt slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
