Hoboken, N.J. (October 28, 2005)- The Manhattan swimming team open up its 2005-06 season with a, 98-78, win over Stevens Tech at the DeBaun Aquatics Center. Freshman
Megan O'Keefe was a double winner and set a new school record in the 200 free, breaking the old record by almost three full seconds.
The Jaspers won eight of the 11 races contested, as
Maura McGowan joined O'Keefe as a double winner, touching first in the 50 yard free with a time of 25.93 and the 100 yard free with a time of 57.55. McGowan was also a member of the winning 200 yard medley relay, as she combined with
Sarah Szotak,
Courtney Arduini, and O'Keefe to post a first place time of 1:58.28.
O'Keefe's record breaking time of 2:01.44 broke the previous record of 2:04.15, set by Arduini in 2003. O'Keefe also touched first in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.22.
Other event winners for Manhattan were Szotak, who placed first in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:07.85, Arduini, who recorded a time of 1:13.20 to place first in the 100 yard breaststroke, and the 200 yard freestyle medley team of
Heather Kennedy,
Bethany Karbowski, Robin Ficarelli, and
Nicole Mason, who produced a time of 1:54.72 to easily outdistance Stevens Tech.
Manhattan returns to the pool on Friday, November 4, as the Lady Jaspers swim in their home opener against St. Francis-NY at 6:30 p.m.
