New Rochelle, N.Y. (October 14, 2005)- In a game played in a steady downpour, Iona defeated Manhattan, 1-0, this afternoon in a MAAC contest played on Mazzella Field on the Iona campus. The Jaspers fall to 0-2-0 in MAAC play, while the Gaels even their MAAC record at 1-1-0.
The game's lone goal came in the 30th minute, as Iona's Maciek Sliwinski took a shot from 50 yards out that hit the cross bar and just scraped by the outstretched hands of Manhattan keeper
David Mires.
Bryan Knight paced the Manhattan attack with two shots on goal, while
Javier Escobedo and
Chris Smith each tallied one shot on net.
Mires made a game-high five stops in net for the Jaspers, with Robert Blake making four saves for Iona.
Iona posted an 18-9 advantage in shots, but just a 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to action on Sunday, October 16, when the Jaspers continue MAAC play in Fairfield, Conn., taking on Fairfield University in a game that is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
