LAST MINUTE GOAL GIVES MAINE A 3-2 WIN OVER MEN'S SOCCER

Newark, NJ (September 19, 2004)- Maine junior Adam Chenault put back his own rebound in front of the net with just 22 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give the Black Bears a 3-2 win over Manhattan today in a game played on the NJIT campus due to unplayable conditions at Manhattan's home field. The Jaspers fall to 1-3-0 on the season, while Maine improves to 2-1-1.

Maine's Kevin Forgett got the Black Bears on the board first when he deflected a redirected shot off Manhattan goalkeeper Collin Leaver on a corner kick 12:13 into the game. Maine doubled its lead just over 10 minutes later when Cooper Friend picked up his second assist of the day, feeding a long pass to Justin Stockford who broke in alone and beat Leaver to the lower right corner.

Manhattan caught a break 12 minutes later, as a Maine defender tried to clear a Joe Pumo crossing attempt, but inadvertently put the ball in his own net for an own goal that brought the Jaspers to within one, 2-1.

The score remained the same until the 63:04 mark, when Justin Schultz, on a direct kick off a restart, placed a shot just below the crossbar that tipped in off of Maine goalkeeper Chad Mongeon to knot the score at 2-2. The goal was Schultz's team-leading third goal of the season.

The two teams battled back and forth through the rest of regulation and the first overtime, as each goalkeeper was called upon to make plays to keep his team in the game. The game looked to be heading towards a draw before Forgett provided the game winner.

The Jaspers were outshot by the Black Bears by a 36-10 count, but made the most of their opportunities to put themselves in a position to emerge with at least a draw in the waning seconds. Leaver had a spectacular game in net for Manhattan, stopping a career-high 17 shots, including seven in the two overtimes. Mongeon made three saves for Maine.

The Jaspers will return to action on Tuesday, September 21, when they travel to Charlottesville, VA to battle the 25th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers in a game that is slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.
