MEN'S LACROSSE FALLS IN MAAC FINAL TO PROVIDENCE, 11-6

Buffalo, NY (May 9, 2004) - The Jaspers' lacrosse team in the 2004 MAAC Championship game fell to #3 Providence, 11-6. The Friars received their first NCAA bid in team history. The Jaspers finished the season with an 8-7 overall record.

In the first quarter, the Jaspers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with goals by Justin Otto and Chris Oppito. Providence soon netted its first goal of the game, cutting the lead to 2-1. The Jaspers extended their lead with a goal by Greg Lewis, making the score 3-1. The Friars responded with three straight goals, giving them the 4-3 edge at the end of the quarter.

The Friars extended their lead with two goals in the second quarter, at the 10:53 mark and the 8:20 mark. With 1:11 remaining in the half, Justin Otto netted his second goal of the game to cut the lead to two, 6-4.

The Friars scored the first goal of the second half but the Jaspers bounced back and cut the lead to one with two straight goals by Brian Murray and Greg Lewis, making the score 7-6.

Providence kicked off the fourth quarter with a quick goal by Michael Farley at the 14:09 mark, giving the Friars the 8-6 lead. Dan Guintini netted his fourth goal of the game for the Friars, giving them the 9-6 advantage. The Friars tallied two more goals finishing the game with the 11-6 victory.

The Jaspers were led by Greg Lewis and Justin Otto who each recorded three points. Freshman Chris Oppito tallied one goal and one assist. Justin Otto, Greg Lewis, Chris Oppito and Brett Warmington were all named to the 2004 MAAC All-Tournament Team. Mark Rotella from Providence was named All-Tournament MVP.
