Riverdale, NY (April 22, 2004)- Jillian Medea allowed just one run while striking out nine as Manhattan took the first game of its double header against Drexel, 3-1, today at Gaelic Park. Drexel's Krista VanWert allowed just one run while striking out six in the nightcap as the Dragons posted a 2-1 win in game two. The Lady Jaspers are now 9-22 on the season, and see their win streak snapped at six.
In the first game, Manhattan got on the board first, plating a run in the bottom of the second. Stefanie Gozdziewski led off the inning with a walk, and, after a groundout advanced her to second, went to third on a double by Megan Jurkowski. Marina Ysaac then hit a grounder to third, and Gozdziewski was tagged out in a rundown, but the Drexel catcher tried to double Ysaac off first and threw the ball away, allowing Jurkowski to score.
Drexel (15-23-2) knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, as Jonnae McClain drove home Debbie Botke with a single up the middle.
The Lady Jaspers responded with two runs in their half of the fourth, as Jurkowski tripled home Michelle Gutierrez, and Kerry Cook connected on a RBI single, scoring Jurkowski.
Medea (6-11) scattered seven hits in picking up her fifth straight win. Elizabeth Fuller (10-7) took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, over four innings.
In the second game, Drexel jumped on the board in the top of the first, as Botke's RBI sacrifice fly plated Karen Morizi. The Dragons extended the lead to 2-0 in the third, as Stephanie Graziosi scored when Botke hit the ball right, but was thrown out at first.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Lady Jaspers cut the deficit in half, as Gozdziewski connected on a one out triple, and was driven home on a Gutierrez single to center.
Manhattan threatened in the bottom of the sixth, as Margaret LaFex belted a two out triple, but was stranded on third.
VanWert (2-6) scattered five hits for the complete game win, while Kristin Gelsleichter (1-2) allowed no earned runs, while surrendering just four hits and striking out three.
Manhattan gets back in action this weekend, hosting MAAC rival Niagara on Saturday, April 24 in a doubleheader slated to begin at 9 a.m., and MAAC foe Canisius on Sunday, April 25, in a twin bill also scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
