Bethlehem, PA (February 28, 2004) - The Lady Jaspers dropped their season opener against Lehigh University at Ulrich Sports Complex in Bethlehem, PA, 17-10. Victoria Carman led the team in goals finishing the game with four. Manhattan's record is now 0-1 overall and 0-0 in the MAAC Conference.
Lehigh took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Barrie Cominsky eight minutes into the game. It looked like the game would be an easy one but Manhattan came back, scoring three unanswered to tie it up at 3-3. Unfortunately, the Mountain Hawks caught fire again, scoring four more before the end of the half making the score 7-3.
Not even two minutes into the second half Carman received a free position shot starting the three goal comeback. Catherine Dunbar and Erin Warren were the other scorers who helped Manhattan cut the score deficit to 7-6. However, Manhattan could not hold on in the second half as Lehigh scored ten goals in the second half.
The Lady Jaspers pulled within 11-9 with 14:50 left to play, but Lehigh scored six of the last seven goals in the game pulling out their first victory.
Nora Jacquette and Molly Pheterson each scored a pair of goals for Manhattan. Jacquette had a 100 percent shooting average scoring on the only two shots she took. Ella Studdiford led the Mountain Hawks with four goals in the game to go along with 2 assists.
The Lady Jaspers (0-1) return to action on Saturday, March 6th, as they travel to take on the University of Vermont. Game time is set for 11:00am.
