John Lovett, a member of Manhattan’s 1973 NCAA Championship team, is in his sixth season as an assistant coach with the Jaspers. A 1973 graduate and 1997 Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, he ran the opening half-mile leg on the Jaspers’ distance medley relay team that set a world record en route to that national title.

Along with the distance medley relay, Lovett was a part of the team that still holds the school record in the indoor two-mile relay. He also set individual marks in the 880 yards and 1000 yards during his career.

Lovett was a five-time All-American and two-time IC4A champion at Manhattan. He was named All-East 11 times and won four straight Metropolitan Championships in the 1000 yards. At the 1973 NCAA Indoor Championships, Lovett posted a split of 1:53.2 in the half-mile leg of the distance medley relay, as Manhattan went on to set a world record of 9:43.8. That victory helped clinch the team title, Manhattan’s first NCAA Championship in any sport.

In addition, Lovett represented the United States at a 1972 international meet against the Soviet Union.

He returns to Riverdale after a successful stint as head coach at Bishop Kearney High School in Brooklyn. Lovett coached at Bishop Kearney from 2000-16 and mentored individual Brooklyn/Queens champions in both indoor & outdoor track & field, as well as cross country. His cross country teams captured five Brooklyn Conference titles and three Brooklyn/Queens crowns.
